The question
Where does a life actually happen?

Who do you want to be, and why?

Everyone knows A and Z. This lives in B and Y.

In one breath

Process is what transpires along the journey between A and Z. Everyone knows A, the start, and Z, the result; most people leap from one to the other and discount the middle. B and Y are the literal in-between, and they are two questions. Who do you want to be? And why? Identity, craft and meaning happen there.

Everyone knows A and Z

B and Y are the in-between.

Not a form. A mirror. Nothing you write leaves this browser.

The founding line of this project, written in 2023 for a channel that did not yet exist: “Process is what transpires along the journey between A and Z. B and Y are the literal in-between. Who do you want to be, and why?”

Everyone knows A and Z. A is where you are. Z is the result: the launch, the title, the number, the finished thing. Plans are drawn between them, and most people leap from one to the other and discount what happens in the middle. But the middle is where the life is. The middle is where the skill is formed, the identity is tested, the meaning is made. The result is a snapshot of a process. The process is the thing.

Two questions, not two letters

B and Y are not stations on a line. They are questions that are live at every point of it. Who do you want to be? is the question of identity, asked in the present tense, as a matter of posture rather than destination. Why? is the question of meaning: what makes this worth the middle at all. Hold both while you work and the work changes character. Drop either and you are back to leaping from A to Z.

The interactive above asks you to answer them. Whatever you write stays in your browser. It is not a form; it is a mirror.

Four altitudes of the in-between

The in-between can be occupied from different heights. The source material names four, as a developmental arc rather than a moral one.

Transfixed. Fixated on what is happening to you. Reality arrives at a self that reacts. The traffic was bad; the market is against me. Not lies, but the self is on the receiving end of every sentence. This is the default of early consciousness, and most people live here in most domains until something dislodges them.

Transactional. You have discovered agency. What I am making happen becomes the centre. Deals close; products ship. An enormous leap, and most of what the culture celebrates as competence lives here. But creation is still a trade, with a cost-benefit tally running underneath.

Transformational. You notice that you are not only making things happen; you are influencing a field. Position matters more than motion; the quality of what you broadcast shapes outcomes no direct exchange could produce. You stop closing one deal at a time and start changing the conditions under which deals appear.

Transcendent. Different in kind. The first three are positions the self occupies in relation to its creation. The fourth reorganizes identity: the self as an instrument through which a larger intelligence expresses itself. It is the most active posture of the four, active in a different direction: aligning rather than imposing.

A person typically occupies different altitudes in different domains, and that is not hypocrisy; it is the ordinary condition. What moves one up is the quiet exhaustion of the prior position’s strategy. The work is to notice which altitude you are standing at, in each domain, and to ask whether it still serves.

As whole, not towards whole

The trap in the middle is to treat it as a deficit: a distance still to be closed, a self still to be completed. From a journal entry in October 2026: “Moving forward as whole versus moving forward towards whole.” And: “Wholeness bounded within broader wholeness without ever invalidating my progression.”

This is the distinction between change and growth. A jump in size imposed from outside is change: more arriving faster than you can metabolize it. Growth is capacity rising, with size following, or not following. Size is change. Capacity is growth. You can be whole where you stand and still be travelling.

The long cut

The shortcut masks what it skips, and the skipped part comes back as the feeling of being a fraud. The long cut is slower by design, because the depth is the point. A moment fades. A movement compounds. This whole site is a long cut: a place to stay in B and Y on purpose, in public, and let the record show what the middle is like.
