The Thesis
The ontology underneath everything here, stated once.
Thesis 01
Change is prior to form.
Things do not change. Change manifests as things.
Thesis 02
The stage is the substance.
The field is not empty, and it answers.
Thesis 03
Stance is substrate.
Being over doing.
Thesis 04
Who do you want to be, and why?
Everyone knows A and Z. This lives in B and Y.
Thesis 05
No finish line.
Nothing is finished. Everything is in refinement.
The spine
- 01Change is prior to form.
soIf things are what change looks like when it slows, the ground it moves in cannot be empty.
- 02The stage is the substance.
soIf the field is the substance and it answers, what it answers is the posture you bring.
- 03Stance is substrate.
soIf stance is the ground of action, the work is in who you are being while you act, not at the result.
- 04Who do you want to be, and why?
soIf the life is in the middle, nothing in the middle is ever finished, only deepened.
- 05No finish line.
The ontology
How the five hang together
They are one argument read at five depths. Change is prior to form: things are motion steady enough to be named. If so, the ground that motion moves in is not an empty stage; the stage is the substance, a continuous medium that answers by its own integrity. What it answers is not the technique you bring but the posture you bring: stance is substrate. If the posture is the ground of action, then the work is in who you are being while you act, which is why the two live questions are who do you want to be, and why. And if the life is in the middle, nothing in the middle is ever finished, only deepened: no finish line.
Read upward, the order reverses. Because nothing finishes, the questions stay live. Because the questions are about being, posture is the lever. Because posture is what the medium answers, the medium is not empty. Because the medium is motion, so is everything in it.
The vocabulary
Process. Not what happens to things. What things are. The field. The continuous medium things are patterns of; not a container for reality but reality seen as one fabric. Agreements. Time, space and form, understood as the rules of rendering that let a whole show itself as a world that can be lived from the inside. Coherence. Intention, expectation, attention and body saying one thing; what the field couples to. Stance. The receptivity around which circumstances organize; the ground beneath the hands. Transformational and transactional. Participating, or trading. The same action can be either. The ledger. The tally that asks what went in and what came back; good for learning, bad as a measure of worth. B and Y. The in-between, named by its two questions. Halftime. The pause in the middle of the game where the plan meets what actually happened. Complete and finished. Whole and able to stand, or closed with nothing left to work against.
The lineage
Two thinkers hold the whole thing up. Aristotle for practice and purpose: phronesis, the wisdom that lives in the doer; eudaimonia as an activity, not a prize. Whitehead for what reality is made of: occasions of experience rather than enduring substances, the creative advance into novelty, the fallacy of mistaking an abstraction for the concrete. Behind them Heraclitus and Bergson on flow and duration; Spinoza and Plotinus on one substance that overflows; Polanyi on knowing more than we can tell; Heidegger on mood as the way a world is already disclosed; the Daodejing on acting with the grain; Buddhist impermanence as something that can be trained into perception. None of them is the system. The system is what happens when the ideas are tested against mornings.
What this site is
A living corpus of philosophy in contact with the world. The theses above are the front door. Behind it, four levels of contact: notes, where an idea first gets written down; articles, one idea each, four to seven minutes; experiments, which publish their question and method at the outset and then accumulate dated check-ins in public; and Halftime Talks, the same inquiry out loud, running since 2016. Threads run across all four and open with the current understanding before showing how it got there.
What it is not
Not a system to adopt. Not finished conclusions. Not advice on getting things, and not a vocabulary for making the universe pay out. The journals that feed it stay private; what appears here has been metabolized into something a reader can test. Everything on this page is dated by the pieces beneath it and will change when they do.
